At the age of 4 Rachel broke her leg and had to visit her local children's hospital, the Janeway in St. John's. One year later she received a Perler Bead kit and made a letter "B" for her dad, and put a magnet on the back. Her dad suggested that she use her bead kit and make more magnets, sell them and give the money to a charity. Rachel very quickly decided on the Janeway.
Rachel, along with the help of her little sister Julianne, started out making and selling their fridge magnets hoping to raise $100. As word spread, they quickly smashed their goal and raised $8000 that year for the Children's Miracle Network Telethon.
Not resting on their success, Rachel and Julianne extended their inventory from magnets to include Christmas ornaments, hair clips and snowman pins.
The "money magnet" sisters sold over 7500 units, using over 800,000 beads, and received in-kind donations over $35,000. In 2013 they became the youngest-ever recipients of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award for their efforts.
Rachel and Julianne's quest "to help the sick kids" continues in 2016 in new and innovative ways! They have turned their interest to hosting youth dances in their home community and have raised additional thousands of dollars for the Janeway.
They still accept donations, 100% of which go directly to the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation.
